This autobiography was assigned to me when I was a junior in high school. Three years later, as a sophomore in college, I was asked to read the book again for my class on Black Thought and Literature. I wish that I had taken the time to slow down and analyze Frederick Douglass' narrative from a literal, analytical, and figurative perspective. Had I done that the first time around—as opposed to treating the book as another required reading that I needed to speed-read through—I believe that my understanding would have been more in-depth and meaningful. The emotion and conviction with which the author writes is not only poetic and moving, but captivating as well. The imagery, combined with Douglass' views on religion's role in the enslavement of black bodies, masterfully paints a story that (in combination with other narratives) has, unfortunately, been lost throughout time. In fact, many Black writers during this period refused to publish their experiences for fear that they will be caught and returned to slavery. In other cases, some writers used pen names to add some anonymity to their experiences. Nevertheless, such works should be cherished and valued; for they allow us to gain a better understanding of how far our society has come, and how much more needs to be done to ensure a future where everyone is equal (in the truest sense of the word).

This is the edition close to the original. Be careful as many other editions are out with additional opinions by modern "interpreters". This book, from the original author, needs no added opinions or editorials.

Still quite a moving read more than 150 years after it was written. I am not yet 50 years old, yet I have seen in my own lifetime the unreasonable attitude that has somehow been passed down over time to this generation. Several times, I have seen my very own friends mistreated because they are black. It stems from a lack of compassion, grown out of fear or ignorance. I recommend this book as a most important read for our adolescent children, no matter what their racial or cultural surroundings have taught them.

Good read. It took me a little less than 2 weeks to read this book. I only read it on the train to and from work so when I did finish it I had mixed feelings. I wanted to know more about his life once he was finally in the free state. He didn't explain how he navigated through the slave states to reach his final destination. He gave his reasons. Understandable for the time which was before emancipation but I was still curious and looking forward to reading about that. Also at the end he says he sent for his wife...She wasn't mentioned throughout the entire book then she pops up. Where and when did they meet? I'm really nip picking but overall a very good read. I definitely took advantage of the dictionary that was available on Kindle Unlimited. This guys vocabulary was crazy also some words we just don't use in today's world. Looking for another book to get lost in.

BUT BEAR IN MIND, FREDERICK DOUGLASS DOES MAGNIFICENT GOOD IN WRITING FROM HIS EXPERIENCES IN SUCH A WAY THAT STIRS YOUR HEART AS WELL AS YOUR BRAIN BECAUSE HIS MOTIVATION IS TO DO GOOD AND TELL THE TRUTH IN A COMPELLING MANNER BECAUSE OF HIS ACUTE INTELLIGENCE AND HIS HEART FILLED WITH LOVE, NOT HATE, AND FAITH IN GOD, NOT EVIL HYPOCRISY AS DEMONSTRATED BY VICIOUS SLAVEOWNERS PRETENDING TO BE CHRISTIANS DOING GOD'S WORK, BUT QUITE THE OPPOSITE.THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT RELIGION, INSTEAD ABOUT HORRIFIC EFFECTS UPON BOTH SLAVES AND SLAVEOWNERS. THIS IS A "MUST READ." PRINT IN BOOK TOO SMALL. HENCE I RECOMMEND USE OF KINDLE INSTEAD.AN ASIDE: (IN THE END, IN MY OPINION, THE BLOODY CIVIL WAR THAT TORMENTED OUR GREATEST PRESIDENT, LINCOLN, WAS OUR MORAL DUTY TO ENGAGE IN ON DIFFERENT LEVELS, TOO LONG TO ADD HERE.)

This book was one of the most heart rending, stirring narratives I have ever read. I now live in Frederick Douglas country close by where he was born... Frederick Douglas is a profoundly gifted writer that tells his story in a way that is poetic. This book gave me an even greater appreciation for all he endured, for all he overcame and lived through and for what he became! What an inspirational story that helps us all appreciate the life he lived and the impact he has had on millions of people! EXCELLENT read. Now I am on to the later, longer version of his writings.

This is a very spirited story. The passion for freedom that slavery causes is very clear in these pages. Frederick Douglass improves himself more and dared far greater than I have in my life or most others I know. It is easy to take my freedom for granted, and be lackadaisical about my life and how my time is spent. But after reading this autobiography I can see the passion and fervor missing in my life. What is interesting is that slavery enslaves the slave owners even more than the slaves. It not only corrupts their moral character, but it also makes them lazy in mind and self improvement. The very qualities the slavers try to instill in the slaves to keep them bound. Once in the north, Frederick shows that all the working people without slaves are much more wealthy. Those without slaves in the south are very poor, showing that slavery also damaged even the morals of those without slaves. These same tendencies are evident with the hitech generation. The removal of work has to some degree improvised our ability to better ourselves.

I pre-ordered this book and was anxiously awaiting it on my Kindle. I read the entire thing in two evenings - it is well written and easy to read, but also chock full of interesting and inspiring advice and anecdotes. I have read all of the author's previous time management books, but I think this one is my favorite - there are enough anecdotes to keep it interesting, but the points and time management strategies are summarized really well so that you can easily find them later and review them.There was a great balance between strategies to spend your time at work better to further your career as well as to make time for leisure and fun. It definitely made me think about the things we say/hear about being working parents and consider that they might not ACTUALLY be true with some careful stewardship of our time.This book is definitely targeted towards an upper middle class audience with money to spend on outsourcing home/errand solutions and babysitting. The author definitely advocates trading money for more time in life to do fun things. She also addresses specific issues like getting enough sleep, finding time to exercise, and time for hobbies and leisure pursuits. Her solutions are "bigger" than just saving a few minutes here and there - they are more about getting you to think differently about your priorities and what you do with your large blocks of time.Note: the images of the time logs nicely format into landscape view on my old Kindle DX, but the print is small so I'd rather view them online. I appreciate the links provided to see them directly. This may not be an issue with newer Kindles.Even though the subject of this book is a study on working mothers' time use, I would say the advice is also relevant for working dads. She also interviewed and wrote about single parents extensively, and the tech industry, lawyers, and academia seem to be equally represented. This was a highly useful and enjoyable book.

I don't expect to find myself lost at sea, or lost on the Arctic ice sheet, or lost in the Gobi desert, but if I do I have an idea on how to find my way out now. I might get lost on a big Texas ranch though, and if I do I have a very good idea of how to find my way back now just by looking at the trees - more so than before I read this book.I bought it on a whim really, not because I need to know these techniques. Maybe that whim was out of a passing fancy to do some research on how people navigated tens of thousands of years ago. So I ordered it, opened it, and then stayed up a lot later than I should have three nights in a row as I devoured it.This book really delivers. I was fascinated by how the Polynesians navigated the gigantic Pacific Ocean thousands of years before the Europeans could build a boat. How they could find tiny little islands thousands of miles from anywhere before latitude and longitude and chronometers were a thought in anyone's mind. And the explanations are detailed. How no matter where the famous European sailors landed they found ancient cultures already in place. Even on those tiny little islands.Our ancestors knew navigation methods that modern man has not the slightest idea of, and this book explains what they knew and how they knew it. Along the way you learn some pretty cool skills, skills you are not likely to need, but if you ever do...you'll amaze your friends, conquer your enemies, and win the best looking women.It is an old book, written a long long time ago. Way before modern things like GPS were dreamed of. And that old-school style of writing is charming.This is an excellent book on many levels, a thoroughly enjoyable read, well written by a well spoken man, who lived a life of adventure that few of us could ever approach. You'll be informed, entertained, charmed, and learn a lot more about man's history of distribution than you'd at first think.

This is a great book. Really informative and a fun read. This was originally published in 1958, so it's from a pre-cell phone/internet era. Cool examples: Telling time by the stars, kind of bird+number of them = how far you are from land, determining north/south from termite mounds, etc.. Plus, the author compares and contrasts how different cultures all over the world navigated and treats each with respect (even if the vernacular is at times out of date). Pretty cool for 1958!

To review what I like about this book would go on and on. Basically the description covers all you need to really know about what's in it. It's all very illuminating... when you think you know quite a bit it turns out you probably don't. There's so much I learned from this book, and I was in the US Navy. They didn't cover a fraction of this in bootcamp. Even later on when I was in the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist program, which encompasses a supreme amount of navigation knowledge, they barely even touched on but a few of these methods. It's a shame... I wish this was a mandatory read for my shipmates and I.I did however find it a wee bit frustrating to read. I've never read a book that beats a dead horse so badly. Halfway through the book I felt that if I read one more word about how 'there's no sixth sense' I was going to burn it. There's even a whole chapter based on it... and this isn't the only point he beats to death either. He's very long-winded when it comes to describing things, for example, here he lists things a person can hear of the land while he is offshore (as if we didn't already know): "He can listen to the sound of chopping, sawmills, church bells, whistles, to the rumble of trains and other industrial and highway noises, to the lowing of cattle, the crowing or cackling of poultry, the bleating of sheep, to waterfalls and rapids or the sea's surf". --now, tell me that couldn't have been shortened a bit. Ugh!He also tends to give way too many examples from the pages of history or his own experience. While this is pretty informative and sometimes appreciated, it's not the most useful information... like I don't need you to prove what you just said; I believe you, man. Once he explained the point I didn't feel that I learned anything further from him then beating it into me with some explorer's logbook from the year 1577. I definitely feel this book could have been summed up in about 50 pages without leaving anything practically important out. In the end, the information contained within this book is well worth finishing it in spite of any frustrations you just might have while reading it... especially if you don't mind loading up on history facts.

When one is put in that situation that you believed you would never be in then reading this book could be the difference of finding your successful return. When with no cellphone, GPS or map and compass to assist you then reality hits.I have used this book information many times over the years and have taken the time to re-read.Being a traveller of remote and distant locations I find the book very helpful. I am sure it has contributed to my more timely return and assurance of arriving.Most of the time we become in need is when things happen that should not or are inexpected events.This book will help all who could find themselves in a place you know not where you are.The book will be of interest to those who have a love of the outdoors. The book makes you more aware of what is around you.The age of the books writting should not put you off reading this book.Harold Gatty has taken the time to remove the riddles that plagued early explorers.We know the names of those that made their destination but know only a few who did not arrive.Survival is getting to youre destination where ever it is. In towns, Bush,mountaians and at sea.Happy travelling and have adventures with confidence.In todays world we have gadgets but they are rarely available when required. This book is a default place when all else fails.

I enjoy reading how other forex traders trade and develop their strategies as a forex trader myself, I would like to constantly improve myself and see what others are doing that might help me in my trading. I personally have been doing trading from stocks to forex for the past 10 years, some information are important and some not so. I will rate the book based on how much good information are there for both novice and veteran. They can add it on to their own trading arsenal or simply a refreshment. =)So after reading this book, I will give you the take away I got from this book. Read all of this guys books on trading they are gems. I have 3 screens set up for each pair that encompass all his strategies and I have a strong tendency of posting winners and the losers are small. For instance his section on Fib dovetails nicely with his section on patterns and when the Pattern matches up with the Fib you have a high probability trade. Mr. Damir does not use indicators much and I use them to confirm and its scary how his methods tend to line up close with certain indicators and be successful in trading. On the other hand the indicators when they do not line up with Damir's method are iffy and tend to whipsaw, sure you get good trades but a number of losers too. I read Damir everyday if I have a question about what I am seeing. Cheers, hope this helps.

I have been trading futures for about 2 years and consider myself just below intermediate in my skill level, meaning I am making money but still have a lot to learn to obtain larger profits. I just began trading FX and bought this book, although the content could be applied to futures, options or stocks. I liked this book because it covers the basics of learning to read charts and to trade based on current price action and not lagging indicators. This book is simpler than other chart books I have seen. In this regard I believe this simpler method will help me plan better entries, stops and exits. This strategy consists of money management (well planned entries, stops and exits) and interpreting the immediate price move, rather than depending on many lagging indicators. Personally, it will help me determine when price has finished retracing -- a problem I have had -- because it taught me to identify *which* candles to pay attention to and *what characteristics* they should have. The book is short, the writing is concise, and I liked that it was not unnecessarily long. I finished the book in a few short sittings.

I like the simple approach that the author takes the reader. Since I read the book, my trading approach has been changed. I used many different indicators, with poor results. Using the price action method and keep it simple is a great way to trade. However, I'm still level in my account, but not loosing as much anymore. I need to put into practice the other methods explained in the book. I bought the other books to continue with the same principle explained in the book, "keep it simple, use price action, and good money management."

I've enjoyed the book. It seems to be right to the point. I've been trading for a few months and am not doing as well as I would like. Many of the Technical Indicators I've been using seem to be lagging. In your book you say not to use Technical Indicators. I like this. I've ordered another of your books. I'll most likely go through them all. I am also reading other authors. In your reviews no one is saying they are making lots of money. I want to make money. I would love to Forex Trade for additional income.

After all, it’s them (together with brokers) who makes us to lose money. That is my experience so far.
